Ski Wear Manufacturing Guide: Waterproof Ratings, Insulation and Private Label

Updated 30 October 2026 · By Salman Munawar, Founder, Ravix Pro Industry

Quick answer: Private label ski wear is built around a waterproof, breathable shell (about 10,000–20,000 mm), taped seams, synthetic insulation and ski-specific features such as a powder skirt and helmet-compatible hood. Start with 30 pieces per design and plan 2–3 months before the winter season.

Ski and snowboard clothing is technical outerwear: it has to keep riders dry, warm and able to move. This guide explains the specifications buyers need to decide before ordering custom ski jackets, snow pants, bibs and ski suits.

Quick answer

For most resort ski wear, choose a 2-layer polyester or nylon shell rated about 10,000 mm waterproof / 10,000 g breathable, with critically taped seams and synthetic insulation (about 80–120 g/m² in the body). For wetter climates or backcountry, move up to 15,000–20,000 mm, a 3-layer shell and fully taped seams.

Waterproof and breathability ratings

Waterproof rating What it means Best for
5,000 mm Light snow, dry conditions Budget and kids’ ski wear, fashion pieces
10,000 mm Most resort snow Standard ski and snowboard wear
15,000–20,000 mm Wet snow, rain, long days Premium, freeride and backcountry

Breathability is measured in g/m²/24h: about 5,000 g for casual use, 10,000 g for active skiing and 15,000–20,000 g for high-output touring.

2-layer vs 3-layer shells

2-layer 3-layer
Build Shell bonded to a membrane, with a loose lining Shell, membrane and inner layer bonded together
Feel Softer, warmer with insulation Lighter, tougher, more technical
Cost Lower Higher
Best for Insulated resort jackets and suits Shell jackets for freeride and touring

Seams and zips

  • Critically taped: only the main exposed seams (shoulders, hood) are taped
  • Fully taped: every seam is taped for maximum waterproofing
  • Water-resistant zips or storm flaps over zips

Insulation

Most ski wear uses synthetic fill because it stays warm when damp. Brands often map it by zone, for example about 100–120 g/m² in the body and 60–80 g/m² in the sleeves. Shell jackets have no insulation and are layered over fleece or mid-layers.

Ski-specific features

Jackets Pants and bibs
Helmet-compatible hood, powder skirt, pit zips, ski-pass sleeve pocket, goggle pocket, wrist gaiters Boot gaiters, scuff guards, vent zips, adjustable waist, bib braces, reinforced knees

Water-repellent finish (DWR)

A DWR finish makes water bead on the outside. Many brands now ask for PFC-free DWR, especially for EU and UK markets. Specify this in your tech pack.

Branding

Embroidery, reflective and silicone prints, rubber and woven badges, custom zip pullers and printed linings. See branding and decoration.

Ravix Pro’s MOQ is 30 pieces per design with mixed sizes. Sampling takes about 10–14 days and bulk about 3–5 weeks. For Northern Hemisphere winter stock, send designs by June–July; for Australia and New Zealand, by February–March.
