Quick answer: A heavyweight t-shirt is made from thicker cotton jersey, usually around 220–300 GSM or more, which gives a structured, premium feel.
Walk into any modern streetwear store and you will notice the tees feel different: thicker, structured, boxier. Heavyweight t-shirts have become a signature of premium streetwear, and for many new brands they are the first product to launch.

Which Cotton Is Best for Heavyweight Tees?
Combed and ring-spun cotton give a smoother surface and softer hand feel than open-end cotton, and they print better. Most premium heavyweight tees use 100% combed cotton jersey. Garment washing or garment dyeing after sewing softens the fabric and reduces shrinkage.
Heavyweight cotton can shrink if it is not pre-shrunk. Ask for pre-shrunk or garment-washed fabric, wash at 30°C inside out and avoid hot tumble drying to keep the print and shape.
