Quick answer: A real factory can show its own production lines, staff and machines, will do a live video call from the floor, and issues invoices in its own company name.
Many suppliers that call themselves “manufacturers” are really trading companies or marketplace sellers who pass your order to someone else’s factory. That is not always bad, but you should know who actually makes your clothes. It changes your price, your control over quality and how fast problems get fixed.
Quick answer
A factory owns the machines and people that cut, sew and decorate your garments. A trading company takes your order and places it with one or more factories, adding a margin. A marketplace seller lists products on platforms and may be either. To tell them apart, ask for a live video tour, in-house process list, company registration and certificates in the company’s own name.
Factory, trading company and marketplace compared
| Factory (manufacturer) | Trading company | Marketplace seller | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who makes the garments | Its own staff and machines | Other factories | Either; often unclear |
| Price | Lowest (no middle margin) | Factory price + 10–30% margin | Varies; platform fees added |
| Quality control | Direct, on the production line | Indirect, depends on their inspector | Often limited |
| Changes and fixes | Fast, decided in-house | Slower, passed between parties | Slow |
| Product range | Focused on what it can make | Very wide (many factories) | Very wide |
| Best for | Repeat custom orders, private label | Buying many unrelated products at once | Small one-off purchases |
10 checks to verify a real factory
- Live video tour. Ask to see cutting, stitching and printing on a live call, not only photos.
- In-house processes. Ask exactly which steps happen in their building. A factory names its departments.
- Company registration and export licence in the same name as the invoice.
- Certificates in their own name (WRAP, amfori BSCI, OEKO-TEX, ISO 9001), checkable with the issuer.
- Address and map that match an industrial area, not only an office tower.
- Sample room. A factory makes samples itself in days; traders wait for a factory slot.
- Technical answers. Ask about GSM, stitch types, ink types. Factories answer without “checking with the team”.
- Consistent MOQ and lead times that fit their own capacity.
- Bank account in the company name in the country of production.
- Visit if you can. Or use a third-party audit or inspection company.
When a trading company makes sense
If you need 20 unrelated products (socks, bottles, bags, tees) in one shipment, a trading company can consolidate them. For custom sportswear and private label clothing, buying direct from the factory usually gives better price, faster sampling and clearer responsibility for quality. Design, pattern making, cutting, stitching, sublimation, screen printing, DTF, embroidery, quality control and packing all happen under one roof, so we control colour, fit and timing ourselves. Our advice in this guide comes from what we see on real orders every week: the questions buyers ask, the mistakes that delay production, and the details that make a sample match bulk.

FAQs
Is it cheaper to buy directly from a clothing factory?
Usually yes. Trading companies add a margin, often 10–30%, on top of the factory price.
How do I know if an Alibaba supplier is a factory?
Ask for a live video tour, check the business licence and certificates are in the same name, and ask which processes are done in-house.
Are trading companies bad?
Not always. They help when you need many unrelated products in one shipment, but for custom clothing a factory gives more control.
Can I visit a factory in Sialkot?
Yes. Many buyers visit Sialkot. If you cannot travel, a live video tour or third-party audit works well.
